Eating Half Awake in the City that Never Sleeps

I recently did a quick trip to New York and when I say quick, I mean it. I blinked once and I was already on the plane seated next to a crying baby heading home. Somewhere deep inside I felt like the baby too.

One thing about New York, well two.

  1. You are barely going to sleep because you’re on to the next activity after the first one ends.
  2. You’re going to be half awake eating.

I was in town for the US Open Tennis and mainly ate there, but I did find time to eat out in the city. Here are my sleepy meals aka I took a single picture because I was half awake, but still hungry.

If you’re looking for something healthy try out Sweetgreen in Brooklyn, New York. I was fresh off my plane and needed something quick to eat so I decided to get a salad. I ordered the chicken avocado ranch salad. It came with chopped romaine, white rice, tortilla chips, apples, pickled onions, avocado, blackened chicken, and green goddess ranch.

I had the food delivered so I didn’t need to wait around in a restaurant or anything. Just something quick and healthy. The salad was 10/10. Delicious. I’ve never had a salad with rice before so that was different, but all-around great pick. The salad did its job of filling me up and leaving me healthy.

After a long day of watching tennis, I grabbed what is known as a roti taco at Taco Mahal. I’ve never had an official roti taco till then, but I’m pretty sure every time I’ve eaten roti, I’ve eaten it like a taco. I ordered the chicken curry roti taco because I wanted to be basic and boring in hopes it would be the easiest thing to make and not be messed up.

A few things I will point out is that the location we went to was a bit dirty and small and I’ll give the service a 5. There wasn’t much space to sit with a big group so consider take out if you’re with a group. A group had come in at the same time as my partner and I and they took all of the leftover chairs after I grabbed two chairs for us. The tables/seats were dirty so I had to do a little bit of cleaning before sitting down.

Another thing to note was that the cashier charged us for an extra taco without our permission and when it was brought up to her she tried to wave my partner off. It was the end of the day and I was ready to be in bed so I left it alone, but I didn’t forget. We ended up changing our order to take out and left with our food.

I took maybe three bites. The one chicken curry roti taco I ordered was dry and barely had any sauce. I took a bite out of my partner’s taco and his was better than mine. I gave the rest of mine to my partner and went to bed. Overall, 4/10. I’m hoping it was just a bad night. I will try them out again when I’m less annoyed/hangry. I’m sure they can do better.
