Oxbow Rum Distillery in Baton Rouge

I recently attended a conference in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where I participated in a scavenger hunt and one of the tasks were to take a picture of a distillery. The nearest one to me was the Oxbow Rum Distillery.

Roots in Sugarcane

Based on their website it says that their family estate has raised sugarcane since 1859. (Hmm… wondering what was happening in 1859) Outside of their history, they say that their rum is made from 100% Grade A sugarcane molasses and they see the state of Louisiana becoming “America’s premium rum destination.”

Rum is a top favorite so I don’t mind that becoming true. Less distance hopefully means cheaper rums.

All of their rum is made from scratch and if you take the tour, they offer you can learn more about how they make their rum. They offer tours in their tasting room from 12 pm to 8 pm Thursday through Saturday and 12 pm to 6 pm on Sunday.

I didn’t have enough time to take the tour so I did the next best thing and grabbed a drink and sat at the bar talking to the bartenders there. The vibe was really nice. It seemed like a popular place, but not a crowded type of popular.

The bartender mentioned that they previously hosted a wedding there and I can see something like that happening there as the space is beautiful.

I only had time for one drink so I had to make it special. With it being the official rum for LSU, I tried their Tiger Smash. Their Tiger Smash is made up of frozen lemonade, their white rum, and blackberry syrup.

If I had to rate the drink, I would give it a 5. It was very sweet. I typically like sweet drinks, but IK think the syrup threw me off a bit. It somewhat tasted like peanut butter and jelly and I hate PB&J. They had a summer list of cocktails that all looked amazing so now I have another excuse to try something else.

I will be back. Classy drinking!
